Full-day tour of the Seelow Heights battlefields.
On April 16, 1945, more than 768,000 Soviet troops opened the assault on Seelow Heights, ninety minutes east of Berlin. The first day brought the largest artillery bombardment in history: 1,236,000 shells fired across the Oderbruch valley.
Roughly 150,000 German defenders held a 40-metre escarpment above the flood plain. Their commander, General Heinrici. Zhukov expected to be in Berlin within days. It took three, and cost the Soviets dearly.
This full-day tour puts you on that ground. You stand where Zhukov stood and watched his assault stall in the mud below. You walk the German trenches and the anti-tank ditch at Sachsendorf, 4.5 metres deep and swept by machine-gun fire. You trace the three-day battle to its last stand at Jahnsfelde on April 19th, where a Flak battalion held the road long enough for a field hospital to get out. Berlin's fate was decided here, on this valley floor. And almost nobody has heard of it.
Tour Highlights
Zhukov's command post, Reitwein Spur: Stand where the Marshal watched the largest bombardment in history light the sky, then watched his assault bog down in the mud below. This is where Stalin phoned to berate him.
The anti-tank ditch, Sachsendorf: Walk Heinrici's killing ground. The Hauptgraben runs 4.5 metres deep and 4.5 metres wide, backed by minefields and 88mm guns sighted from the heights above.
The Shooting Gallery: Cross the flat, waterlogged valley that Soviet tanks crossed with their hatches closed and no infantry beside them. Thirty-one German tanks on the ridge turned open ground into a kill zone.
The German trench lines: Walk the preserved trenches and reverse-slope positions on the escarpment itself, where Tiger IIs destroyed advancing T-34s in ambush after ambush.

The Battle of Seelow Heights was the last major German defensive stand before Berlin, fought over three days from 16 to 19 April 1945. More than 768,000 Soviet troops under Marshal Zhukov attacked roughly 150,000 German defenders dug in on an escarpment above the Oder valley. The assault opened with the largest artillery bombardment in history and cost the Soviets 727 tanks before the line broke and the road to Berlin lay open.
-
Seelow Heights sits about an hour's drive east of Berlin, near the Oder river on the German-Polish border. Our full-day tour covers the journey both ways by private van, with a historical briefing on the drive out so you arrive already oriented.
-
The simplest way to see the whole battlefield is a guided vehicle tour, because the sites are spread across open countryside with no transport linking them. A regional train runs from Berlin to Seelow, and from the station you can walk to the Seelow Heights Museum and memorial. But the rest of the battle, Zhukov's command post, the Oder bridgehead, the anti-tank ditches and the German defensive lines, lies several kilometres out across farmland and villages with no buses between them. Our tour reaches every stop in one day, in the order the battle unfolded, with a historian who knows the ground.
-
The tour runs a full day, about eight hours door to door. That includes roughly an hour's drive each way, five or more hours on the battlefield sites, morning tea at the museum and a lunch stop.
-
The tour follows the battle in sequence across eight main stops. You start at the Seelow Heights Museum, then visit Marshal Zhukov's command post on the Reitwein Spur, the Soviet bridgehead on the Oder, the German defensive lines and anti-tank ditch, the open ground of the Shooting Gallery, and the site of the final stand at Jahnsfelde.

From €139 per person, this is a full day on one of the largest and least-known battles of the Second World War, led by a specialist military historian with no more than seven guests.
The price covers a private van from central Berlin, museum and memorial entry, and morning tea, with hotel pick-up available at €30 per booking.
The battlefield sites are scattered and unmarked, hard to find and harder to read alone. For eight hours on the ground with an expert who knows every position, it is exceptional value. -

-
No. The tour builds the full picture from the ground up, starting with a briefing on the drive out before you reach the first site. Those who already know the Eastern Front in detail will find operational depth beyond the standard account, and newcomers will leave with a clear and complete understanding.
-
Seelow Heights and the Battle of Berlin are the same campaign, days apart. The road the Soviets forced open at Seelow between 16 and 19 April is the road they drove into Berlin, which fell on 2 May. Many guests pair this tour with our Battle of Berlin tour for the complete story of the war's end in Europe.
-
The battlefield sites involve walking on uneven outdoor ground, though the museum itself is accessible. Tell us your requirements when you book and we will accommodate where we can. With a private van and a maximum of seven guests, there is room for flexibility.
-
Yes. Private tours run any day of the week for your group only, from €749, with hotel pick-up included.
